We're continuing to do as much as we can to help him for as long as we can,'' said Palmdale resident and St. Mary's parishioner Dave King. ``We know what we send to him will go directly to help the people right there.'' The group will host a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday at 4925 Halen St., off 47th Street East in Palmdale. A spaghetti dinner is scheduled for 5 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Palmdale Knights of Columbus Knights of Columbus, American Roman Catholic society for men, founded (1882) at New Haven, Conn. Because shipping would be too expensive, the families are not collecting blankets, clothing, food or other items to send to quake victims. ``We're just doing the fund-raisers and sending him the money because we don't have the means to ship things over there because it is very expensive,'' King said. ``We're also working with a couple of orphanages but right now mainly we're focusing on Father Escalante in Salvador because of the earthquake.'' King said he and his wife decided to help Escalante when he left for his home country in November because they knew he would need money to help the poor in El Salvador. They became friends when Mary began teaching him English after his arrival in Palmdale, King said. Before the earthquake hit, the Kings sent him $1,884 raised from a garage sale and through donations by friends and family. Escalante serves at a mission in the town of Tacuba Ahuachapan. ``He's just a wonderful, wonderful, kind, generous human being. As a priest he's just a wonderful man. Everybody here just loves him a lot,'' Dave King said. For more information on how to help, call Ernesto Joaquin at (661) 273-3649. |
