FAMILIES GO THROUGH LOCKUP TO UNLOCK PET OF THEIR DREAMS WASHED-OUT ROAD REQUIRES DETOUR THROUGH JAIL TO GET TO ANIMAL SHELTER.

Byline: Patricia Farrell Aidem Staff Writer

CASTAIC - A family trip to adopt a pet these days means a detour through the county jail in Castaic after the main road to the Castaic Animal Shelter "Dog Pound" redirects here. For the rap group, see Tha Dogg Pound.

An animal shelter is a facility that houses homeless, lost or abandoned animals; primarily a large variety of dogs and cats.

Not surprisingly, business has slowed at the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County shelter, which serves a sprawling area from Gorman to Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  to Acton.

``The odds are good now for people who want to adopt pets,'' said shelter manager Rosendo Perez. ``We're not getting the crowds since the road washed out.''

A 100-yard stretch of Tapia Canyon Road, the normal access to the shelter, was washed away in the Jan. 7-8 storm that wreaked havoc on roads valleywide. Signs guide visitors to the shelter. Rather than exiting Interstate 5 at Parker Road, motorists should exit the freeway at Hasley Canyon Road and follow signs to Pitchess. The guard at the main gate will allow entry during regular shelter hours, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily except Sunday. Signs directing traffic to the shelter follow the jail's winding route.

Along with the usual array of dogs and cats, the shelter has two horses, ages 25 and 31, available for adoption.

``They're old but in good health,'' Perez said. ``They're really good horses.''
