On Thursday, a memorial erected outside the Glendale Police Department - with bronze plaques honoring the four officers who have died in the line of duty in the city's 100-year history - now gives the family a place to honor Officer Charles Andrew Lazzaretto.

The memorial was part of a service the department held to honor fallen officers - the first of what it expects will be an annual ceremony in May, which is National Police Memorial Month.

``This is a place for our kids to go. We came here on his birthday and on the (anniversary of the) day he was killed,'' said Anna Maria Lazzaretto, 39. ``He'd be honored that they are still remembering him.''

Also memorialized were Officer John Isaacson, who was killed May 19, 1971; Officer Leslie C. ``It's important to honor those who have given their lives in service and in protection of the city. Another important reason is - lest we forget Lest We Forget is a phrase popularised in 1887, by Rudyard Kipling; it formed the refrain of his poem Recessional.

Although the number of officers killed in both departments is relatively small compared with larger departments, Gabriel said the losses have more impact.

``What increases our sorrow is the fact that everybody knows everybody in a department this size, and it hits close to home for us,'' he said. ``What was astonishing a·ston·ish
