Don't ask Jenifer Cook about records, stats or standings regarding her Cornerstone Christian girls' volleyball team.

``I haven't been keeping track,'' the first-year coach said.

What she does know is that the Eagles are hard to beat when they're all together. Cornerstone's lone league loss came Saturday when the Eagles were without their setter setter: see sporting dog.

Junior Tiffanie Monzo missed Saturday's match because she had a softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  game. The remaining nine players had a variety of other factors such as taking the SATs that morning, and having a long drive work against them as they ``mentally fell apart,'' according to according to

``Of all the circumstances that are bad, we had them all,'' she said.

With players such as Monzo, senior middle Lisa Gin and junior outside hitter Lindsey Hilgerman, opponents are usually the ones dealing with bleak circumstances. The Eagles are ranked No. 4 in Division VA and have wins against larger schools such as Rio Mesa, which they beat in three games.

``We can contend as long as everyone's there,'' Cook said.

: The Newbury Park boys' water polo team entered the season with high hopes and confidence of returning to the playoffs.

``We had a stretch there where we really struggled,'' coach Jeff Warshaw said. ``They've definitely progressed in the last few weeks, but we are kind of looking at this year as a rebuilding year. We've got nine of 13 coming back next year, so that's the direction we're headed in, but we'd still like to squeeze a few more wins out of this season.''
