By Friday afternoon, 8,482 students had registered for classes at the two-year community college in Valencia, COC See chip on chip.  spokeswoman Sue Bozman said.

The growth mirrors the population surge in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  and is a result of added state funding for community colleges in growing areas, Bozman said.

``The state gave us money to be able to grow,'' she said. ``The community's growing and we were given the money to add a lot of facilities and faculty.''

In fact, the college has 50 new full-time faculty members, twice as many instructors as there were 10 years ago when Bozman came to COC.

``The college president and the assistant superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. It was usually the lowest rank that could be held by a European officer, most of whom joined the police at this rank.  said they've hired more faculty in the last six months than they have hired in their entire professional lives put together,'' she said. ``We're very excited.''

Last year, fall enrollment increased 21 percent over 1997, and 15 percent in the spring semester over the previous year.

Bozman noted that not only are there more students, they are taking more classes. The total number of units students are taking increased an average of 18.7 percent.

Last year also produced record increases in the number of high school students concurrently enrolling classes at the college - from 173 in the fall of '97 to 549 in '98. While numbers aren't available for this fall semester, Bozman said another significant increase is expected.
