FAIR WELL, NOT FAREWELL FAIRPLEX MEET RETURNS FOR 65TH SEASON OF RACING.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Staff Writer

The 65th Fairplex Park racing season opens this afternoon amid optimism that was unthinkable a year ago.

There were fears the 2002 Los Angeles County Fair The Los Angeles County Fair (also called simply the L.A. County Fair) is an annual event held in the Fairplex in Pomona, California, held every September. It is a carnival with rides, merchants, food vendors, cooking contests, and livestock. The 2007 L.A.  meet would be the last hosted by the little 5/8-mile track in the middle of the sprawling carnival.

But Los Angeles County Fair executives' plan to move their meet to Santa Anita Santa Anita may refer to:
  • Santa Anita Park in California, USA
  • Santa Anita, Mexico holy site in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico
and develop the track property in Pomona was scuttled by California racing-industry officials.

``The industry absolutely voted to continue horse racing horse racing, trials of speed involving two or more horses. It includes races among harnessed horses with one of two particular gaits, among saddled Thoroughbreds (or, less frequently, quarterhorses) on a flat track, or among saddled horses over a turf course with  at Fairplex Park, that (message) was loud and clear,'' George Bradvica, the fair's equine manager, said Thursday. ``We are 100 percent behind it. I think we have great momentum going into this meet.''

With more horses ready to run in fewer thoroughbred races this season, Fairplex hopes to give bettors larger fields - and thus more choices at juicier odds - than the higher-class tracks offer.

Fair officials have paid trainers' shipping costs in order to draw more horses than usual from the Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  summer fair. They've added eight mule races to the minor-breeds schedule for the 17-day meet and cut the number of thoroughbred races from 169 to 159. They expect this to produce an increase in the size of the average field - evident in six 10-horse races on opening day.

The meet opens at 12:30 p.m. with a 350-yard mules dash. Today's 12-race card features the $50,000 Foothill Stakes.
