FAIR TO TAP COUNTY'S PAST; NEWEST ATTRACTION TO TAKE A RIDE THROUGH MILLENNIUM.

Byline: Krystn Shrieve Staff Writer

A trip to this year's Ventura County Fair, which opens Wednesday, will offer most of the carnival rides, exhibits and entertainment visitors are used to, but also a history lesson about county life during the past 100 years.

This year's theme is ``Reflections of Yesterday,'' and the newest attraction is the Ventura County Fair & Seaside Park Museum featuring fair memorabilia, local historical society exhibits and re-enactments of turning points in the county's development.

Although no one can remember exactly when the fair began, it has been around for well over a century, organizers said.

``The beauty of this year's fair is that as we reach the end of the millennium we have the opportunity to look back at our roots and celebrate our history and traditions,'' fair spokesman Devlin Raley said. ``This is a marvelous venue for us to see not only where the fair has come from, but also how it's been an integral part of what's happened in the county.''

Some re-enactments include two brothers discussing shipwrecks This list of shipwrecks is of those ships whose have been located. Africa

Phyllis Vaniman, 79, was born in Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  and said she and her family always enjoyed going to the fair.

``Everyone you knew had something entered in the contests, whether it was a pie or a quilt or a painting,'' Vaniman said. ``You could go and stay all day, it was a lot of fun and almost everybody went - that's what made it special.''

Fair officials estimate that 250,000 fairgoers will pass through the gates this year.

To accommodate them, an additional parking lot at the corner of Harbor Boulevard Harbor Boulevard is a major divided street in central Orange County. It runs from Costa Mesa through Santa Ana, Anaheim and La Habra before it ends at Fullerton Road in Rowland Heights just over the Los Angeles County border.  and Schooner schooner (sk`nər), sailing vessel, rigged fore-and-aft, with from two to seven masts.  Drive has been added this year, and it is one of four lots that offer free parking and shuttle services. Paid parking is also available for $5 at San Buenaventura

Big-ticket performers this year include Peter Frampton Peter Kenneth Frampton (born April 22, 1950 in Beckenham, Kent) is an English musician, best known today for his solo work in the mid-1970s and as one of the original members of the band Humble Pie. , the Beach Boys, Harry Connick Harry Connick is the name of:

``The entertainment reflects the diversity of the county,'' Raley said. ``We'll have a little something for everyone. The variety is what will make this year's fair special.''

Allen Luskin, 13, said the best part of the fair is being on the midway, where the barkers are calling out for games and players toss a ping-pong ball in the fishbowl or pop balloons with a dart.

``But I think most of all I like the rides,'' said Allen.
