Adults and children lined up ahead of the 11 a.m. opening to be the first inside, where they gobbled up cotton candy and funnel cakes, rode the huge Ferris wheel Ferris wheel, amusement park ride. It consists of a power-operated wheel that is about 50 ft (15 m) in diameter. It has two rims that are parallel to and equidistant from the shaft about which the wheel rotates.  and visited Uncle Leo's Children's Barnyard, featuring wriggling piglets and a variety of other farm animals.

Some 300,000 people are expected to visit the fair at Seaside Park in Ventura through Aug. 14, drawn by events like motor racing motor racing n (BRIT) → carreras fpl de coches; automovilismo

and entertainment such as musical acts Hoobastank, Lonestar and Styx.

Opening day kicked off with bustling crowds under picture-perfect weather, just steps from the Pacific Ocean.

Many diehard fair fans live outside Ventura, like the Stewart family from Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. .

The Stewarts like to line up hours before the gates open to be among the first to get inside on opening day - a family tradition for 26 years. ``It's a family-oriented place to go,'' said James Stewart. ``This is the one we wait for every year.''

The fairgrounds n. pl. 1. same as fairground.  features racing pigs, firework shows, livestock competitions, art exhibits and more.

But one of the main attractions - at least for young fairgoers - continues to be the exhilarating rides.

At 7, Katie Madrid was just tall enough to meet the height requirement for the Xtreme - where riders sit in cars that swing like a pendulum to increasingly greater heights without doing a revolution.

The young daredevil was all smiles when she jumped aboard with her mother, Susan. As the ride went faster and higher, she shut her eyes and clutched her mom's hand.

Proud dad Ruben watched from the ground as he kept Katie's twin sister, Karie, company.

``She wasn't tall enough ... Maybe next year,'' Ruben said, comforting the youngster who was visibly upset. ``We come here every year. She'll get her turn.''

Julie Beadles of Palmdale found herself eating spiral fries shortly after the gates opened at the fair with her two daughters, Jenna and Kaylee.

``My kids have been coming here since they were born,'' she said. ``We don't go to our fair. We come to this one ... We know what to expect.''
