FAIR HOPEFULS SHARE DOGGED EFFORTS.

Byline: Don Holland Daily News Staff Writer

The contestants were bathed and groomed and waiting their turn to parade before the judges.

For Maxie, a 1-year-old pooch of undetermined parentage PARENTAGE. Kindred. Vide 2 Bouv. Inst. n. 1955; Branch; Line. , it's been something of a transformation from a troublesome and belligerent animal to a loyal, loving and, most of all, obedient companion.

``She used to be really mean,'' confided Maxie's owner, 13-year-old Janice Killion, one of some 20 competitors in Friday's youth dog show at the Ventura County Fair. ``When we first got her, she used to bite everyone. We used to have to put on oven mitts just to put on her collar. Now she's so sweet.''

Since rescuing Maxie from a dog pound in October, Killion has trained the border collie border collie, breed of medium-sized, sheepherding dog developed in the British Isles. It stands about 18 in. (45.7 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 30 to 45 lb (13.6–20.4 kg).  to compete in the youth dog show. Although they have been pals for less than a year, their bond is strong. When Killion recently leaped from a dock to take a swim, Maxie jumped in after her, apparently thinking her owner was in trouble.

``She just grabbed my arm really lightly and swam with me back over to the docks.'' Killion said. ``I'm just hoping she'll listen to me (in competition),'' she said while waiting for her turn. ``She's so smart that she knows that I can't really do anything. And if she doesn't want to (obey), she won't. I just have to make her want to do it.''

Meanwhile, Alisha Breitman, a 15-year old 4-H member from Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  and her sidekick The first popular popup program for DOS PCs, introduced by Borland in 1984. Sidekick included a calculator, notepad, calendar, phone dialer and ASCII table and popularized the concept of a terminate and stay resident (TSR) utility. , Lucky, were hoping their four years of training would pay off. But the excitement of being around so many other dogs and Lucky's penchant for snacks left Breitman hoping for the best.

``Every day I work with him for about 15 minutes,'' she said. ``He likes to be rewarded. But once you start taking that away from him, he says I don't want to do it unless you give me food.''

Michael Milligan, a 10-year-old 4-H member from Camarillo, also was hoping his workouts with his border collie, Shadow, would pay off in front of the judges. But his mother, Terry Milligan, said the rewards of 4-H already have paid off for her son.

``The value of the 4-H is that he's getting the experience of a national organization and rural ideals which can be used in city life,'' Milligan said.

By the end of the day, Milligan and Shadow walked away with a second-place award.

``I messed up on my part,'' confessed the youngster.
