``He's a supporter, a mentor, a leader and a teacher,'' Horowitz said.

Hunter, who announced this week that he would retire in the spring, said he has 20 years of good memories to take with him.

``Teaching passionate screenwriters at UCLA has been the most rewarding experience of my life,'' Hunter said.

For some of those passionate screenwriters, learning under Hunter has brought them rewards as well.

``He's just full of love and support for his students,'' Horowitz said. ``He's been great at getting students who've gone into the business to come back into a mentoring program at UCLA to teach young students.''

Hunter will also be remembered for the monthly ``Writer's Block'' meetings he would hold at his Burbank home, meetings sometimes attended by scores of film and television writers.

The last one was held at UCLA Thursday as a special tribute to Hunter, who hopes the group will continue there.

But many former students will remember Hunter as the professor with the parrot. Hunter said he often brought Sunny Ray to class, if only to keep students entertained.

``It's kind of fun. If somebody gets bored with my lecture, they can look at the bird.''

Hunter will continue to teach the art of screenwriting around the world, conducting seminars and workshops in Paris, Croatia, New York New York, state, United States
