Once completed, the 150-bus yard will allow officials to consolidate Santa Clarita Transit's operations, saving $1.1 million in costs and making bus service more efficient, Smyth said.

The city paid $5.4 million for the 12-acre Valencia property in 2001, and the total cost of the facility is expected to top $36.2 million. The city is using a combination of state, federal and local funds, officials said.

``It is also a way of recycling a material that would otherwise just be sent to a landfill,'' Zeiler said.

A raised floor will house wiring and air ducts and be covered with a carpet made of recycled fibers, Zeiler said.

Bathrooms at the facility will feature extremely low-flush toilets, and all urinals will be waterless, Zeiler said.

Most materials used to construct the 73,000-square-foot building and bus bays will be purchased locally to reduce truck trips on city roads and diesel emissions and pump up the local economy, Zeiler said.

In addition, companies constructing the bus yard will be required to use concrete with lower cost additives and recycle a large part of their leftover materials and waste, Zeiler said.
