Schulhof said that he is impressed by Descanso's oak trees, camellias, roses and native plants. ``That mix of things is extremely rich,'' said Schulhof, who cites his professional emphasis as trees and shrubs, and his personal interest as roses. Schulhof was among nearly 30 candidates considered for the position, and was chosen unanimously by the six-member search committee after he and four other finalists spent a weekend at Descanso Gardens, committee head Joan Hargrove said. ``Richard was the one who impressed us the most,'' Hargrove said. ``With him, it was an immediate connection with the gardens and the plants there.'' The position of executive director was created by the guild in May to streamline the management of the 160-acre, nonprofit botanical and display garden, said Sue Beatty, Descanso Gardens Guild president. As executive director, Schulhof will manage the grounds, handle daily business management and help raise funds for the site, which is owned by Los Angeles County. County employees have previously performed those duties, Beatty said. Schulhof lived in Woodland Hills and other parts of Los Angeles before moving to San Diego when he was 14.
