The 19-year-old's admission will surprise Leeds fans as Manchester United are their bitter rivals.

But Delph insists Scholes, who has scored 142 goals in 609 games for his club, is to be admired.

"I used to watch Paul Scholes really closely - he is a huge idol," admitted Bradford-born Delph ahead of tonight's trip to Liverpool.

"Some Leeds fans most likely won't be happy about that but he's been the top man for almost 10 years in the Premier League.

"He is someone I watched - especially back in his younger days when he was scoring a lot of goals. It would be nice to think I could develop to be half as good as him."

Delph, who struck six times last term in League One for Leeds, said: "I would have liked to have scored more but I have played a lot on the left wing."
