 OF EQUITABLE RESOURCES
 PITTSBURGH, June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Frederick H. Abrew, executive vice president and a director of Equitable Resources, Inc. (NYSE: EQT), has been elected chief operating officer of the Pittsburgh-based energy company effective June 1, 1992.
 As COO, Abrew will be responsible for the operations of Equitable's two business segments, Energy Resources and Utility Services. The energy segment is a major producer of natural gas and oil in the Appalachian Basin and has extensive gas and oil interests and properties in the Rocky Mountain region, the offshore Gulf of Mexico, and Colombia, South America. The utility segment provides interstate natural gas services through two pipeline subsidiaries and distributes natural gas to over 263,000 customers in southwest Pennsylvania and parts of West Virginia and Kentucky.
 Abrew began his service with Equitable Resources in 1980 as operating manager. He was elected vice president-operations in 1981 and vice president-utility operations three years later. In 1986, Abrew took on the additional post of president of the Equitable Gas Company division. In 1987 he was elected vice president-utility services and the following year was promoted to executive vice president-utility services. In 1991 Abrew was named executive vice president of the corporation.
 A graduate of Manhattan College, New York, Abrew holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. Prior to joining Equitable, he served as a division manager of the Long Island Lighting Company in New York.
 In addition to his duties at Equitable, Abrew is chairman of Metscan, Inc.; a director of the Software Valley Development Board and member of the Software Valley Foundation; a member of the Institute of Gas Technology's board of trustees; and past chairman and a current member of the Pennsylvania Gas Association. His other memberships include the West Virginia Oil and Natural Gas Association and the National, Pennsylvania, and Pittsburgh Societies of Professional Engineers.
