Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) is a leading multinational aerospace manufacturer and advanced technology company formed in 1995 by the merger of Lockheed Corporation with Martin Marietta.
 and Pratt & Whitney have completed the first start-up of an F-35 aircraft test engine using an integrated power package and engine-mounted starter/generator. The starter package is an IPP--Integrated Power Package--which combines the functions of an auxiliary power system, an emergency power system and an environmental control unit. A small gas-turbine engine (turbomachine) provides power to the starter and brings the engine up to its threshold starting speed, at which time the engine increases to idle speed Idle speed is the minimum operating speed (generally measured in revolutions per minute, or rpm, of the crankshaft) of a combustion engine. At idle speed, the engine generates enough power to run reasonably smoothly and operate its ancillaries (water pump, alternator, and, if  and the electrical system transitions from operating as a motor to being a generator.
