Eyedea & abilities.LIVE HIP-HOP SUCKS. The days of the crowd-moving MC and DJ tag-team are gone. Nobody freestyles anymore, and DJs just scratch over iPods nowadays anyhow an·y·how adv. 1. In whatever way or manner; however: I'll cook it anyhow you like. They came anyhow they could by boat, train, or plane. , right? So wrong. As with most things, it's rare to find any actual talent under the mountain of suck the industry churns out, but if you do bother to look, you just might find E&A. Lucky you. YOU TWO HAVE BEEN keeping kinda Adv. 1. kinda - to some (great or small) extent; "it was rather cold"; "the party was rather nice"; "the knife is rather dull"; "I rather regret that I cannot attend"; "He's rather good at playing the cello"; "he is kind of shy" kind of, sort of, rather busy these last few years. A: Yes ... Along the way you guys have unified the major DJ & MC titles, released a number of amazing a·maze v. a·mazed, a·maz·ing, a·maz·es v.tr. 1. To affect with great wonder; astonish. A: That fool Slug is the only one blowin' up--blowin' up right now. We'll see what happens when our new shit comes out. You guys are signed on Epitaph epitaph, strictly, an inscription on a tomb; by extension, a statement, usually in verse, commemorating the dead. The earliest such inscriptions are those found on Egyptian sarcophagi. too, with a distribution deal for the new album? A: They call it a licensing deal, so it's still Rhyme Sayers, but we license this album out for them to distribute. You had Atmosphere to kinda break the ice at Epitaph for ya ... you guys geeked on that or what? A: Yeah, it's cool. I like everybody at Epitaph that I've met, and we've seen what they've done with Slug. Shit's still independently owned and all that, we'll see when it comes out how everything happens. You're both officially retired from competition? A: From DJ battling? Yeah. E: I still be battling, I got this little freestyle The code name for the MCE version of Windows. First Words is a Canadian hip hop group, consisting of Halifax beatmaker Jorun, DJ STV and emcees Sean One & Above. from the new album, seems to be the new theme. A: It is the theme. E: When we say that though, we don't necessarily mean "basics" like what the average person might consider the basics, but we mean basics for us. We're musical idealists so you know our basics are still ... Over some peoples' heads? E: Hopefully not, but you never know. I think we did a good job of making it all work. To me good music never goes over peoples' heads. That's the beauty of genius music. Not to say that what we did was genius, but we did some things that we think are musically revolutionary, yet we made it hard, tough--still hip-hop. Music should be something new, yet still ... progress. A: As far as bringin' it back to basics, the first single "Now" fits that perfectly. Raw-ass beat, rhymin', and then you can't get anymore intertwined than cuttin' a motherfucker's vocals in the song, so it's just ... bam! It's that bounce shit. Is this an entire concept album along the lines of First Born, or more how some people do tracks and just put 'em together in a row? A: I think of it as a whole album definitely. Because it was made in such a short chunk of time and really concentrated, it maintains. For some people, maybe certain songs will appeal more than others, but I feel every song holds its own. Was this album consciously not as "thought out" as the previous? A: Personally, it's more of a slow, weirder type album, you know? I had noticed when we play, I would always bring in different types of beats--different instrumental stuff. I realized, that's dumb, I need to make my own shit that I wanna wan·na Informal 1. Contraction of want to: You wanna go now? 2. Contraction of want a: You wanna slice of pie? bring in, know what I mean? So yeah, it's completely conscious. On my side of it, I wanna make my whole shit be performable live, and I know he does too. It was a conscious effort for us to make pounding beats, lyrics that work with that, and then make sure I'm cuttin' so it's all intertwined in the song. E: Definitely one of the biggest things that I personally hit on was delivery. Delivering a vocal that's more aggressive, more intense. I've always been writing words that were meaningful to me, but it wasn't until this record ... It sounds like you're spittin' lyrics a little harder ... E: Way harder. When we were in the studio we were just like, "This is live, you know--this is it!" If you capture that, that essence of pure vocal work and performing and scratching ... It's like if you were to bust that in front of a crowd of a thousand people and that was it, was that really it? Was that hype? Was that emotionally aggressive? What do you have planned for 2004? E: We're startin' off with a North American North American named after North America. North American blastomycosis see North American blastomycosis. North American cattle tick see boophilusannulatus. tour. We got 55 shows or somethin' like that, so we're doin' this little thing to kinda pre-promote that. We're gonna take it step-by-step and once that gets rollin' we'll see where everything else takes us. Are you guys Big In Japan? E: We've never been to Japan, but Eyedea & Abilities and Dibbs, we sell more in Japan than anybody else in Rhyme Sayers for some weird reason. It's not a weird reason ... E: It's just we've never even been there, but Dibbs and E&A, that's their joint I guess. Being that this is for Thrasher thrasher: see mimic thrush. thrasher Any of 17 species (family Mimidae) of New World songbirds that have a downcurved bill and are noted for noisily foraging on the ground in dense thickets and for loud, varied songs. , did you guys ever skate? E: I can still do a kickflip. A: I can't; I was never good, but I still miss it. Skate vids? A: We had a song in the Tony Hawk
