This drama about the difficulties and the joys of being a family is based upon the novel by Nobel Prize Nobel Prize, award given for outstanding achievement in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, peace, or literature. The awards were established by the will of Alfred Nobel, who left a fund to provide annual prizes in the five areas listed above.  for Literature-winning Australian author Patrick White and directed by Fred Schepisi of Six Degrees of Separation and A Cry in the Dark fame.

Set in the 1960s Sydney suburb of Centennial Park, the film focusses on wealthy Elizabeth Hunter (Charlotte Rampling) who, in the final days of her life, summons home her actor son Basil (Geoffrey Rush) and socialite daughter Dorothy (Judy Davis) who distanced themselves from her long ago for reasons unknown.
