In a rich debut collection, Thomas, winner of the 2004 Cave Canem Poetry Prize, pays attention to the ordinary rhythms of living and makes her work refreshing and fortifying. Indeed, like the water that runs through the book, these poems pool on the tongue.

Thomas's snippets of the mundane hold a world of meaning. In "Fault of Memory" she writes, "The dishpan dish·pan

Noun 1. dishpan - large pan for washing dishes
pan - shallow container made of metal
has a gray, still water. Cold / beef-stew smell. / Streaks of cornbread batter / gum a white bowl half in the tub. / Now mother looks up, brings her hands / across her dress front and prepares to touch me. / Her palm a flattened cup, she rubs circles/ on my shoulder. I plan all day to ask this."

The kernels of the domestic and the landscape of the pastoral balance here. Standouts are "Oak Leaf Oak leaf may refer to
  • the leaf of the oak tree
  • Any of several cultivars of lettuce, as in red oakleaf
  • Oak Leaf, Texas
  • Oak leaf cluster, a U.S. military decoration
" and "Water Answering Sky and Mountains," where Thomas writes, "Down through the rushes, / my kick, stretch, and glide / toward a danger of no geography." Amber Flora Thomas's debut is, simply stated, lovely.
