Extruding lignin polymer extracted from wood.

Gehr Kunststoffwerk in Mannheim, Germany (U.S. offices in Boothwyn, Pa.) is working on extrusion of a lignin-based thermoplastic A polymer material that turns to liquid when heated and becomes solid when cooled. There are more than 40 types of thermoplastics, including acrylic, polypropylene, polycarbonate and polyethylene.  made from a byproduct by·prod·uct or by-prod·uct
n.
1. Something produced in the making of something else.

2. A secondary result; a side effect.

Noun 1.
of paper production. Called Arboform, the resin is made by Tecnaro GmbH in Eisenach, Germany. Tecnaro's Arboform polymers were initially thermosets thermosets, materials that can not be softened on heating. In thermosetting polymers, the polymer chains are joined (or cross-linked) by intermolecular bonding. Thermosets are usually supplied as partially polymerized or as monomer-polymer mixtures. , but in 2004, Tecnaro developed thermoplastic Arboform, which processes at very low temperatures (176 to 284 F). Tecnaro is compounding thermoplastic Arboform with oils, waxes, and natural fibers like flax and hemp hemp, common name for a tall annual herb (Cannabis sativa) of the family Cannabinaceae, native to Asia but now widespread because of its formerly large-scale cultivation for the bast fiber (also called hemp) and for the drugs it yields.  to make a material that processes on a conventional single-screw extruder. Gehr's target market is pen tubes. Gehr: +49 (631) 87890/www.gehr.de * Tecnaro: +49 (3691) 62 13 20/www.tecnaro.de
