For several years, Commonweal, in partnership with the Faith and Reason Institute, has been conducting the American American, river, 30 mi (48 km) long, rising in N central Calif. in the Sierra Nevada and flowing SW into the Sacramento River at Sacramento. The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill (see Sutter, John Augustus) along the river in 1848 led to the California gold rush of Catholics in the Public Square Project. Funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts Pew Charitable Trusts, philanthropic foundation established (1948) by the children of Sun Oil Company founder Joseph N. Pew (1886–1963) of Philadelphia to provide funds for "general religious, charitable, scientific, literary, and educational purposes. , the study sought to learn more about how living, breathing Catholics negotiate American civic life. More than thirty colloquiums were convened, producing scores of enlightening en·light·en tr.v. en·light·ened, en·light·en·ing, en·light·ens 1. To give spiritual or intellectual insight to: papers, surveys, and transcripts--some of which appeared in the magazine. This issue of Commonweal contains a special insert, written by Margaret O'Brien Steinfels, summarizing the project's findings. Read all about it following page 20.
