Extended Systems Releases Middleware Application Server.

Business Editors/Technology Writers

BOISE, Idaho--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 21, 2000

Distributed architecture increases database access performance

and provides framework for mobile device middle-tier processing

Extended Systems (Nasdaq:XTND XTND Extend
XTND XML Transition Network Definition
) released a middle-tier software solution today that allows application developers to easily move intensive database processing off the client application and onto the database server.

RPM Server (Remote Procedure Middleware) complements Advantage Database Server, the company's SQL SQL
 in full Structured Query Language.

Computer programming language used for retrieving records or parts of records in databases and performing various calculations before displaying the results.
client/server software, by acting as a workhorse for thin clients. The combination provides an alternative to traditional two-tier database applications where client applications perform much of the application's custom database activity. RPM Server offers a simple way to deploy and maintain code at a single point, providing greater stability to the application and increased efficiency for end users.

&uot;RPM Server has allowed us to fully optimize the Advantage Database Engine,&uot; explains Gilles Muys, President of GM Software. &uot;Now our ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) An integrated information system that serves all departments within an enterprise. Evolving out of the manufacturing industry, ERP implies the use of packaged software rather than proprietary software written by or for one customer.  software offers customers even greater performance and flexibility. The data is being processed in the background, enabling workers to multitask and stay productive while they're doing things like running reports. We're now able to provide our customers with more than just a product -- RPM Server allows us to offer enterprise solutions.&uot;

The distributed architecture of RPM Server is designed to allow future enhancements that will provide connected middle-tier processing for mobile device platforms, such as Palm OS and Microsoft Windows See Windows.

This technology provides the framework for developers to expand their business applications to include the rapidly growing handheld computer A computing device that can be easily held in one hand while the other hand is used to operate it. &uot;RPM Server makes distributed application An application made up of distinct components running in separate runtime environments, usually on different platforms connected via a network. Typical distributed applications  development easy,&uot; explains Pat Sheridan, Business Unit Manager for Mobile Data Management at Extended Systems. &uot; This architecture enables business processes to be shared by many different types of applications across the enterprise.&uot; Rather than building traditional two-tier client/server database applications, developers can instead build centralized business rules and processes. RPM Server enables the developer using Borland's Delphi programming language to create true middleware applications.

Pricing and Availability

Licensing for RPM Server Standard Edition requires use with Advantage Database Server, although RPM Server allows for support of other backend database servers. With a middle-tier architecture, the client application does not require any specific details about the database server implementation. RPM Server is a multi-user, scalable and extendable n-tier server for Windows NT/2000, 95 and 98. With support for up to 50 concurrent users, RPM Server Standard Edition is available to Advantage developers at no charge. About Advantage Database Server

Advantage Database Server is a high performance client/server DBMS (DataBase Management System) Software that controls the organization, storage, retrieval, security and integrity of data in a database. It accepts requests from the application and instructs the operating system to transfer the appropriate data.  for shared, networked, standalone and Internet database applications. With StreamlineSQL technology, Advantage allows developers the flexibility to combine powerful SQL statements and relational data access methods with the performance and control of navigational commands. The Advantage SQL engine handles a subset of ANSI-92 SQL grammar, and Advantage offers client interfaces designed for specific development environments including Borland Delphi, Borland C++Builder, CA-Clipper, CA-Visual Objects, Microsoft Visual Basic, Microsoft Visual C/C C/C Center to Center
C/C Combustion Chamber
C/C Command/Control
C/C Crew Chief
C/C cabin cruiser (US DoD)
C/C chief complaint (medical)
C/C Channel-to-Channel
C/C Communication and Collaboration
++, Microsoft Visual FoxPro and FoxPro 2.6.

Optimum multiple-user performance is ensured by core functions such as row-level locking for fast updates and read-through locking for superior concurrency Operations that are performed simultaneously within the computer. For example, dual-core CPUs provide complete overlapping of two independent processes. See dual core, hyperthreading, multiprocessing, multitasking, multithreading, SMP and MPP.

concurrency - multitasking
, while maintaining a small footprint and minimal memory requirements. Other features of Advantage Database Server with StreamlineSQL include:

-- Native SQL on the remote and local server

-- TDataSet descendant with functionality equivalent to TQuery and

TTable for Delphi developers

-- Table and record encryption for increased security

-- Royalty-free distribution for local server

-- No database administrator required for maintenance

Advantage Database Server can be used in conjunction with Extended Systems' data synchronization software, XTNDConnect Server. This combination enables developers to synchronize custom applications with various mobile device platforms, such as Palm Computing, Microsoft Windows CE and Symbian's EPOC A 32-bit operating system for handheld devices from Symbian Ltd., London, (www.symbian.com). Used in Psion and other handheld computers, it supports Java applications, e-mail, fax, infrared exchange, data synchronization with PCs and includes a suite of PIM and productivity applications.  operating systems.
