Extended Systems Releases Advantage Database Server 5.7; Latest Version Provides Local Server Engine, Enhanced Performance and Functionality.

Business/Hi-Tech Editors

BOISE, Idaho--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 19, 2000

Extended Systems (Nasdaq:XTND XTND Extend
XTND XML Transition Network Definition
) announced today that it is now shipping Advantage Database Server 5.7, an enhanced version of its high performance embedded database (1) Database software that is included with an application rather than offered as a separate database management system (see DBMS). Tending to be compact and efficient, an embedded database generally includes fewer features than a full-blown DBMS.  server.

Advantage Database Server 5.7 features an enhanced local server engine that offers a high performance replacement of the Borland Database Engine Software from Borland that runs on a Windows client and unifies database access across multiple platforms. Using Borland's own IDAPI interface, it provides a middleware layer between the client and numerous databases, including dBASE, Paradox, Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Informix, Interbase  (BDE See Borland Database Engine. ) for local and shared environments. The new version also provides enhanced performance in client/server configurations and support for Microsoft's Windows 95/98 operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. . These new features and added functionality, plus a new set of management utilities, make Advantage Database Server 5.7 faster and more flexible than competing products.

"One of our primary goals at Extended Systems is to provide the products and tools our customers need," explained Mike Lydon, Advantage Research and Development Manager at Extended Systems. "Our customers have requested that our BDE replacement provide the maximum level of performance for local and shared environments. With Advantage 5.7, we've delivered."

A local server configuration enables the database engine and user client application to run on the same computer or workstation, and is often preferred in situations where only a single or small number of users need to access the database. In a client/server configuration, the database engine runs on the server, while one or more clients running on other stations can access the database server over a network. A client/server configuration is preferred when multiple users need to access the database simultaneously. Because developers can move to client/server with a single setting change, Advantage Database Server 5.7 provides an ideal solution for customers who initially need only a local configuration, but expect to migrate to a client/server configuration for multiple users as their database needs grow.

"Advantage Database Server 5.7 is an extremely compelling database alternative to the Borland Database Engine," said Bill Brittain, Senior Developer, Industry Specific Corp. "By providing better performance at a low cost, Extended Systems continues to show its leadership in the market by offering innovative enhancements to its database products and tools."
