Exploration activity continues.

Driven primarily by senior mining companies

Strong base metal prices, an active junior mining play and a renewed commitment towards exploration by many of the area's mining companies are keeping mining interest alive in the Timmins Timmins, town (1991 pop. 47,461), central Ont., Canada, on the Mattagami River. Timmins is the commercial center of the rich Porcupine gold-mining district, where gold was first discovered in 1909. Silver, copper, lead, and zinc are also mined.  region.

Recent developments in the area include the large exploration project recently undertaken by Davidson Da·vid·son   , Jo(seph) 1883-1952.

, Ont.-based mining junior is set to begin advanced drilling on a 576-hectare parcel of property it hopes will provide Timmins newest gold mine (see page SB).

While Davidson Tisdale represents the area's most advanced prospect for a new gold mine, other established gold mining interests are increasing exploration activity within the region to extend the life of existing operations.

Placer Dome Placer Dome was a large mining company specializing in gold and other precious metals, with corporate headquarters in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Barrick has acquired 100% of the Placer Dome shares on January 20, 2006, and has integrated the company into its own.
is looking extensively within a 40-kilometre zone around Timmins for new finds, while Falconbridge Ltd. announced in early July that it was going to extend the life of its Kidd Creek mine by investing $640 million into a deep mine project. The development is expected to extend the mine's production life by at least 20 more years.

Northwest of the city, Calgary-based Agrium Inc. opened Canada's first phosphate phosphate, salt or ester of phosphoric acid, H3PO4. Because phosphoric acid is tribasic (having three replaceable hydrogen atoms), it forms monophosphate, diphosphate, and triphosphate salts in which one, two, or three of the hydrogens of the  mine in Kapuskasing in September. The company invested more than $70 million (US) in the project.

The expenditure includes a processing mill and road and rail access. The company says the mine has proven resources of 22 million tonnes, or roughly 20 years worth of production. The mine currently employs 130.

Brian Atkinson, the region's resident geologist with the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines (MNDM MNDM Ministry of Northern Development and Mines (Ontario) ), says the continued interest in the Timmins mining camp is good news for the local economy and the overall future of mining in the region.

Atkinson says he expects significant new exploration investment will continue to find its way locally as new ore bodies are identified.

"There is a lot of potential in the Timmins area. It is nowhere near being exhausted as far as exploration opportunities are concerned," Atkinson says. "Many things are still hidden."

"As funding and venture capital becomes available, exploration will continue to increase in our area," Atkinson says.
