Explain this!

Buried Alive?

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

ANSWER

YOU CAN DO IT

The city of Beppu is Japan's hot spring capital. Much like the geysers, hot springs, and fumaroles (steam and gas vents) at Yellowstone National Park, the approximately 2,800 hot springs in and around Beppu are fueled by volcanic activity very close to Earth's crust. The magma chambers are so close to the surface at this spa that they heat up the sand! Spa goers like the ones pictured are buried underneath this black volcanic sand and spend 20 minutes relaxing and sweating in their sand sauna before climbing out, rinsing off, and hopping into a hot-spring bath, or onsen, for more relaxation!
