Expanding companies need to understand real estate.


Growing a company can be exciting, but it can also be pretty trying. Even handling the infrastructure can bring headaches. With that in mind, make sure you get a disclosure statement up front, which details whether the broker is representing the landlord or the tenant or both. Think long-term. Consider your long-term growth plans when deciding on a new space. You don't want to find yourself needing to move when you've got a year or so left in your lease.

Interview brokers. Some things to consider: SIOR and CCIM designation and whether the broker is representing the tenant or landlord.

Consider a sub-lease. If your company is growing quickly, you won't want to lock into a long lease.
