Expanded Tool Set from Motorola Will Help Reduce Time-to-Market For ADSL Equipment Manufacturers.

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 8, 1998--

Comprehensive Processor Integration, Reference Designs and

Software Protocol Stacks Will Ease the Development Process,

Allowing Customers to Focus on the Value-Add Portion of the

Design Cycle

Manufacturers of ADSL equipment based on Motorola's CopperGold Solutions can now enjoy the competitive advantages that come with a shortened development cycle, as Motorola (NYSE:MOT) Monday announced an expansion of its CopperGold Tool Set, for use with the CopperGold line of semiconductor products.

To help its customers reduce their time-to-market, Motorola has performed comprehensive processor integration and is introducing a comprehensive development system solution, complete with reference designs and software protocol stacks. The new tools include the CopperGold ADSL Data Pump A circuit that transmits pulses in a digital device. It typically refers to the chipset in a modem that generates the bits based on the modem's modulation techniques., the CopperGold System Development Kit (SDK) and Communication Protocol Stacks.

Developed to enable designers to focus on product functionality and differentiation, the value-add portion of the design cycle, the new solutions augment Motorola's existing line of convenient and powerful support tools.

These include the CopperGold Evaluation System, a reference board that enables equipment manufacturers to easily and quickly evaluate their ADSL product designs and bring solutions to market at a more rapid rate, and CopperGold Control Software, which provides complete control and monitoring of the CopperGold Transceiver and ADSL Link.

CopperGold Data Pump

Designed to provide customers with rapid prototyping capability, the CopperGold Data Pump board includes the low power, single chip CopperGold Transceiver, the high performance CopperGold Line Driver A device that extends the transmission distance between terminals and computers connected via private lines or networks. Also called a "short-haul modem" or "limited-distance modem," line drivers can extend a signal that is normally limited to a few dozen or a few hundred feet up to several miles. Line drivers are used to connect POS terminals, machine tools, sensors and a myriad of other digital devices to a host computer. Speeds typically range up to 128 Kbps., Interleave Memory, an RJ-45 Line Jack and an Isolation Transformer -- all in a 2.5" x 3" package (the smallest footprint available today) dissipating a total of 3 watts (the lowest power in the industry).

Available in CO and RT configurations, the CopperGold Data Pump can be used with Motorola's MPC850 to generate a complete reference design for the ATU ATU - Abstract Tribe Unique (hip hop)
ATU - Accumulated Thermal Unit
ATU - Across the Universe (Beatles song)
ATU - Acute Treatment Unit

modular platform for the support of multiple transceivers by one host controller.

The ATU-C is based upon Atlas' Diamond Internetworking System, which supports up to four Network Interface Modules such as the CopperGold Data Pump, ATM, Ethernet, etc. The ATU-R schematics, BOM and reference design are available at no cost to customers.

Multiple Board Support Packages (BSP) and other tools are available for different real time operating systems (RTOS) supported by the MPC850/860 families. The complete CopperGold SDK is priced at $4950 and is planned to be available in Q3 98.

Communication Protocol Stacks

To further assist the development process, Motorola selected INVERNESS SYSTEMS Inc. to provide the first integrated software protocol stack running on the CopperGold ATU-R reference design. With an interface to the CopperGold Control Software, the protocol stack runs on the MPC850SAR and implements PPP over ATM over ADSL via tunneling and ATM signaling.

It adheres to the latest Microsoft proposal currently supported by more than 30 vendors and under ballot consideration as an ADSL Forum official specification.

"In the competitive telecommunications environment, equipment designers must have access to high quality development support, in addition to high quality components," said Dave Bush, systems and applications engineering manager for Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector.

"Motorola is dedicated to providing our customers with the tools they need to be successful in the ADSL market. The CopperGold Tool Set has been designed to enable decreased development costs, speedier time-to-market and reduced project risk -- all of which are key elements in today's quick-moving marketplace," Bush continued.

Motorola's CopperGold Family of ADSL Solutions

Motorola's CopperGold Family includes the highly-integrated transceiver (MC145650), the performance-optimizing and power-saving line driver (MC03AX1456), and a wide array of complementary components tailored for specific applications such as Ethernet transceivers (MC68160), ATM Cell Processors (MC92501), and many host control options (MPC860, MPC860SAR, MPC850, MCX683xx, MC68EN302/360).

In addition, Motorola recently announced that it will develop a CopperGold Lite ADSL Solution, capable of supporting both V.90 and ADSL technologies. The CopperGold Family of ADSL Solutions is fully supported with evaluation boards, APIs, a system analyzer and Motorola's world-class applications support.
