Application Managers Now Have the Capability to Implement Software

Acceleration on Hardware Platforms Each hardware platform, or CPU family, has a unique machine language. All software presented to the computer for execution must be in the binary coded machine language of that CPU. Following is a list of the major hardware platforms in existence today. Expand Networks, a leading provider of Application Traffic Management systems, today announced the availability of its Accelerator Server(TM), a Linux-based software solution that adds the power of application traffic management to standardized blade servers A server architecture that houses multiple server modules ("blades") in a single chassis. It is widely used in datacenters to save space and improve system management. Either self-standing or rack mounted, the chassis provides the power supply, and each blade has its own CPU, memory and  (see today's related announcements "Expand Networks Takes Application Traffic Management to the Next Level" and "Expand Networks Unveils New Generation of Accelerator Appliances"). Linux-based Software Solution

The Accelerator Server is a Linux-based software solution that ports many of the Application Traffic Management features of the new Expand Accelerator appliances like application acceleration and bandwidth efficiency The introduction to this article provides insufficient context for those unfamiliar with the subject matter.

tools that reduce wide area network (WAN) costs and improve application response times. The Accelerator Server allows the enterprise to automatically increase network capacity and improve application response times by 100-400%, stop bandwidth abuse and align network resources with business priorities. Unique features include next-generation compression, application acceleration, traffic discovery, Layer 7 application visibility, sophisticated reporting and Instant QoS.

Making WAN Application Deployment Easy

The new Accelerator Server can be deployed as an application service, optimizing the delivery of applications over the WAN without any direct network interaction. . Standard failover protocols and redundant configurations provide maximum uptime.

"Having a software version of Expand's WAN optimization WAN optimization products seek to accelerate a broad range of applications accessed by distributed enterprise users via eliminating redundant transmissions, staging data in local caches, compressing and prioritizing data, and streamlining chatty protocols (e.g., CIFS)..  offering that runs on conventional server platforms will make it much more straightforward for an application manager to address WAN performance constraints and thereby accelerate and improve application deployment," said Peter Christy chris·ty

Leveraging Standard Server Platforms

The new Accelerator Server fulfills the need for application performance over the WAN by using standardized servers. This allows enterprises to take advantage of volume purchases on hardware from preferred server vendors while affording them the ability to leverage systems, tools and expertise in managing standards-based servers.

"The Accelerator Server changes the addressable Reachable. When something is addressable, it can be identified and manipulated independently of its surroundings. For example, screen pixels and RAM memory are addressable. Each of the screen's picture elements can be individually turned on and off, and each of the memory's bytes can be  customer in the enterprise for WAN application optimization," said Pedro Colaco, vice president of marketing at Expand Networks. "While the Accelerator appliances are network devices, the Accelerator Server enables application infrastructure managers to solve the problem of application delivery over the WAN without depending on network connectivity."

Pricing and Availability

The Accelerator Server is currently in beta and will be generally available in June 2004. Pricing begins at $3,495.
