William Barnaby Faherty has revisited the life and career of the Confederacy's most famous Catholic chaplain, Father John B. Bannon. This book provides the first book-length biographical treatment of Bannon's early life in Ireland, his ministry in St. Louis, Missouri, and to southern troops, his work for the Confederate government, and his subsequent preaching in his homeland as a Jesuit priest. Previously, Faherty wrote a short book on Bannon's Jesuit ministry in Ireland, from the 1860s until Bannon's death in 1913. Two years later, Confederate president Jefferson Davis asked Bannon to return to his native Ireland and convert the Irish to the southern cause. Bannon had little success. Following the war, Radical Republican lawmakers in Missouri blocked Bannon's efforts to return to St. Louis. He remained in Ireland, joined the Jesuits, and became the Gaelic island's most prominent preacher in the 1880s. Published by the Missouri Historical Society Press, Exile in Erin will have limited appeal outside of local readership in the St. Louis area. Although it covers much of the same ground as Tucker's book, this does not diminish Faherty's abilities as a researcher and writer. Samford University Not to be confused with Stanford University.
