GAB Robins Group Appoints Executive Vice President-CFO

GAB Robins Group has appointed Robert E. Broatch executive vice president and chief financial officer. Broatch, who will be based at GAB Robins' headquarters in Parsippany, N.J., was senior vice president and CFO for UnumProvident Corp. in Portland, Maine.

Before joining UnumProvident, Broatch was senior vice president of finance with Aetna Inc. in Hartford, Conn.

Crum & Forster Selects President

Nikolas Antonopoulos has been named president of Crum & Forster, Morristown, NJ.

Before joining Crum & Forster last year as an executive vice president, Antonopoulos was a principal of Marsh & McLennan Capital Inc. Antonopoulos will report directly to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bruce Esselborn.

CEO Quits at Australia's Reac

Nick Steffey has resigned as chief executive officer and managing director of Reinsurance Australia Corp. Ltd., the troubled Sydney, Australia-based reinsurer that is putting itself into runoff.

Steffey's resignation culminates a rapid descent from a year ago, when he was fresh on the scene at Reac and touting a strategy to steer his company through a market that was pounding other Australian reinsurers. But 1999 proved disastrous for Reac, and in February the company announced it was preparing to go into runoff after its year-end losses ballooned to an estimated A$377 million (about $226 million).

Zurich Global Energy Appoints Smith as Senior Vice President

Zurich Global Energy, Schaumburg, Ill., has appointed Denis H. Smith senior vice president of claims. In this newly created position, Smith will be responsible for maintaining global claims integrity in concert with Zurich Global's core philosophy.

Before joining Zurich Global Energy, Smith spent four years at Ace International, formerly Cigna International, as vice president of claims worldwide. He was vice president/claims manager at Starr Technical Risks, a division of American International Group Inc.

Wright Leaves Zurich for Ace USA

Joyce Wright, the head of claims at Zurich Financial Services, resigned to become executive vice president and operations officer of Ace USA.

Wright is responsible for the Philadelphia-based U.S. operations of Ace Ltd. She will oversee communications, risk management, marketing, administration, reinsurance and operations.

Ace USA consists largely of the U.S. property/casualty operations that Ace Ltd. bought from Cigna Corp. Wright will report to Ace USA President and Chief Executive Officer Dennis Reding.

Transamerica Reinsurance Names Bidelman Executive Vice President

Transamerica Reinsurance, Charlotte, N.C., has appointed Wayne D. Bidelman executive vice president.

Bidelman also was named president of Transamerica Reinsurance's international division and will serve on the management board and executive committee. With 25 years of experience in the life/health reinsurance industry, Bidelman will lead the company's international operations, including its recently announced expansion into the Latin America and the Asia-Pacific regions. He also will help establish a U.S.-based international unit responsible for providing support to these offices.

Bidelman comes to Transamerica Reinsurance from ING Re, where he was involved in all aspects of the life reinsurance business, including marketing, sales, actuarial, risk selection, product consulting, strategic planning and international reinsurance.

Safeco Appoints Lead Director To Help Improve Its Profitability

Safeco Corp.'s board has appointed longtime board member William G. Reed Jr. as lead director to help the Seattle-based company's management team to improve its profitability.

Reed, 61, was the chairman of Simpson Investment Co., a forest-products holding company, until retiring in 1996. He continues to serve on the company's board and the boards of Microsoft Corp., the Seattle Times, Paccar Inc., Washington Mutual Inc. and Washington Mutual Bank. Reed has been on Safeco's board since 1974.

Horizon Blues Taps General Counsel

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey has appointed Thomas J. Calvocoressi vice president, general counsel and secretary. Calvocoressi was with Aetna Inc., Hartford, Conn., for 16 years, most recently as vice president and general counsel.
