The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or IEEE (pronounced as eye-triple-e
(IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields. ) recently honored Robert M. Janowiak, executive director of the International Engineering Consortium (IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission, Geneva, Switzerland, www.iec.ch) An organization that sets international electrical and electronics standards founded in 1906. It is made up of national committees from over 60 countries.

), with their Vice President's Recognition Award "for contributions to engineering and engineering education activities that are related to the mission of the IEEE EAB." That mission includes the implementation of programs specifically intended to serve and benefit the educational pursuits, not only of IEEE members, but also of the engineering and scientific community as a whole, as well as the general public.

Mr. Janowiak was presented with the Award for his leadership of the Consortium's educational forums and on-line education, and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association (ECEDHA ECEDHA Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association ). "Each of these activities in itself is a major contribution, and the combination of all three has had a profound impact on the practice of engineering in the USA and around the world, and on engineering education," said Lyle Feisel, Vice President of IEEE Educational Activities.

Mr. Janowiak has been a director of the IEC for nearly 40 years and has been executive director since 1983. His leadership of the IEC has made a significant impact on electrical engineering and professional education. Under his direction, the number of IEC affiliated universities has grown from 13 to 74, and the organization's executive and managerial education programs serve more than 10,000 annually. He founded a grant program that has enabled 10,000 professors and 30,000 students to participate in IEC Forums, where they learn current industry needs and practices.

"In the increasingly competitive and fast moving high-tech world, both industry professionals and university professors must keep up-to-date. The Consortium annually educates over 10,000 face-to-face and more than one million using on-line learning," says Mr. Janowiak.

Mr. Janowiak was selected as the first-ever recipient of the Award, which was established in 2001 by the EAB to give the IEEE's Vice President for Educational Activities "an opportunity to recognize IEEE members who have had a significant and substantial effect on the practice of engineering and of engineering education."
