 centres may be present. None of the seven targets have been drilled before, although two have prior drilling nearby that was not targeted through comprehensive geological and geophysical studies. Initially, the targets will be tested with 250-350 metre holes, with deeper drilling reserved for those areas that show the best results. The program is designed to unfold in three, 2,000 metre phases with the drilling roughly evenly divided between ground Excellon has optioned from Exploraciones del Altiplano S.A. de C.V. and ground held under the joint venture with Apex Silver Mines Corporation.

Drilling will target historic mining areas, clusters of prospects and alteration centres located along structural trends recognized as being favourable throughout the range. These structures have been mapped in outcrop and their projections are reflected in NSAMT geophysical lines run over adjacent covered areas. NSAMT results indicate that some of these structures may host intrusives at depth, and these covered targets are included in the drilling program. Geochemical sampling and metals ratios studies show that three of the target areas have very strong and coherent signatures indicative of a "proximal" (near-source) setting, whereas others have a strong medial signature. Two targets will test intrusive centres that may reflect source zones for the mineralizing event(s).

Excellon's Chairman, Richard Brissenden, said: "Geologically we are in the centre of the most productive part of the Mexican CRD Belt and have long thought that a large ore deposit could be present in the Platosa area. However, after hitting the high-grade mineralization that we are currently test-mining on the fifth drill hole back in 1999, exploration efforts have focused totally on bringing this discovery into production, deferring any larger scale district exploration. Now that we've established a regular revenue stream from the test-mining of the distal high-grade silver-lead-zinc Platosa Mantos, we are eager to turn our efforts to finding their large-scale source. The field work necessary to refine the district-scale models and generate the targets for the current drilling program was completed over the last six months while test-mine production was being established. An aggressive underground drilling campaign from the Platosa Mine workings has also been planned to expand the resource base available to the current mining operation. The underground drilling program will begin shortly, once the district scale surface program is successfully launched."

Several features make CRDs highly desirable mining targets, including: 1) Size - CRDs average 10-15 million tons of ore and the largest range up to greater than 50+ million tons, 2) Grade - ores are typically polymetallic with metal contents ranging from 2-12% Pb; 2-18% Zn, 60-600 g/T Ag, Tr-2% Cu and Tr-6 g/T Au, and 3) Deposit morphology - orebodies are continuous and average 0.5 to 2 million tons in size, with some up to 20 million tons. CRDs are typically metallurgically straightforward, amenable to low-cost underground mining methods and have minimal environmental footprints.

The Platosa Mine is exploiting very high-grade distal mantos and it is the medial and proximal part of the spectrum, where mineralization increases in volume, that is being sought. Field work has focused on determining how exposed mineralization, alteration, intrusion types and host rocks in the Platosa area indicate the location(s) of the remaining parts of the spectrum. The current drilling program is designed to find these.
