Excellon And Destorbelle Announce Initial Results From Phase 1 2002 Drilling Program For Platosa/Saltillera Joint Venture With Apex Silver Mines Limited.

Excellon Resources Inc. (CDNX:EXN) and Destorbelle Mines Limited (CDNX:YDB) are pleased to announce initial results from Phase 1 of the 6,000 metre 2002 drilling program on the 14,126 hectare (35,000 acre) Platosa/Saltillera Properties in north-eastern Durango State, Mexico. Nineteen holes, totalling 2,870m were drilled using 2 core rigs. Fifteen holes, totalling 1,960m, were drilled around known mineralization in the Platosa area. Four holes, totalling 910m, were drilled in previously undrilled areas around the Zorra and Refugio Mines on the western side of the range from Platosa in the Saltillera area. All 19 holes have been logged and sampled, but results are only complete for the Saltillera holes and the first 6 Platosa area holes.

Fifteen holes were drilled at Platosa seeking to extend known mineralization, close the 125m gap between the 4 and 6 Mantos, and seek additional mineralization along the SW-NE trend along which the major orebodies occur. The results of the first five holes are reported here. Holes 40, 41, 43, and 44 were drilled in the gap between the 4 and 6 Mantos and all hit mineralization. The first three cut 2.5 to 4.15m of high-grade massive sulphides (see table) adding over 80m of strike length to continuous massive sulphide mineralization. Hole 44 cut dispersed mineralization in the same stratigraphic interval as the first three. This is the same style of mineralization seen adjacent to massive sulphides elsewhere on the property, suggesting that massive sulphides lie nearby. Holes 42 and 45 sought offsets of the #4 Manto to the north and southeast respectively. Hole 42 hit geochemically anomalous mineralization at the host level. Hole 45 hit massive sulphides at 61 metres between Discovery Hole 99-05 and the historic Platosa Mine. This is the shallowest sulphide drill intercept to date and has grades comparable to those from the old mine.

Four holes were drilled around the Zorra and Refugio Mines in the western Saltillera area. Significant alteration and minor mineralization associated with intrusive rocks was encountered in 3 of the holes. The best intercept was in Hole ST-08 where a 1.2m wide quartz-sulphide vein surrounded by over 20m of silicification was cut.

Assaying is being performed by ALS-Chemex Laboratories of Vancouver with check assaying performed by ACME Laboratories of Vancouver. Results are consistent between the two laboratories. A drillhole plan and certain cross-sections are available upon request and will be uploaded to Excellon's website shortly.

The exploration program was designed and supervised by Mr. A. D. MacKenzie, P. Eng., and Dr. Peter Megaw, respectively Excellon's President, and Consulting Geologist and Exploration Manager of its Mexican subsidiary.

Excellon is the operator of the Platosa/Saltillera Joint Venture and has a 34% interest therein, with Apex Silver Mines Limited (AMEX - SIL) having 49% and Destorbelle 17%. Apex has the right to acquire two percentage points of the joint venture pro rata from Excellon and Destorbelle for a consideration equal to 2% of the present value of the joint venture based on a preliminary feasibility study, such consideration to be capped at U.S. $1,000,000 for the purpose of Apex exercising its option.

Within sixty days of the completion of the 6,000 metre drilling program, Excellon may, at its option, require Destorbelle to complete a business combination, pursuant to which Destorbelle and Excellon will amalgamate on the basis that the issued shares of the amalgamated corporation will attribute to the predecessor corporations in proportion to their respective interests in the joint venture, subject to reasonable adjustments for assets not related to the joint venture and for liabilities. This business combination will be subject to regulatory approval and to the approval of the shareholders of both companies.
