Wear Valley District Council (WVDC) and County Durham-based Sones Landscaping was the only public/private sector partnership to reach the final and was praised for the quality of workmanship, including customer service.
At the inaugural Performance Networks Awards, organised by the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE), WVDC and Sones were runners-up in the Parks, Open Spaces & Horticultural Services category.
APSE has more than 300 local authority members in Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales.
Sones Landscaping operations manager Darren Hardman said: "We believe this award really highlights what can be achieved when private companies work seamlessly with the public sector.
Wear Valley District Council head of service Brian Graham said: "We are delighted that our work with Sones Landscaping has been recognised in this way.
"We have worked together as a partnership over the last five years and, we believe, have established a really effective, trusting relationship which is beneficial for all involved."
SMALL mobile communication company CCS Mobile has rung up a two-year extension on its contract with sportswear firm Nike.
The Sunderland cellular and in-car solution specialist ( which supplies mobile phones, PDA's, 3G and Blackberry devices ( is celebrating the deal with one of its most important customers.
The 20-year-old company has supplied technology to Nike UK, which operates out of Doxford International Business Park, Sunderland, for the last seven years.
CCS Mobile managing director Chris Lee said: "We are thrilled that Nike UK have signed the extension to their contract.
"As one of our largest clients this is an important win for our business.
"We are a typical SME based in the North-East and it's a credit to our approach that we have maintained an excellent relationship with a number of international companies like Nike.
"Part of our success is that we have remained small and our locality.
"We are proud to be part of the prospering business community within our region."
