:LANW), the leader in video interpretation services, announced today a new service agreement with Children's Medical Center Dallas.

Children's Medical Center Dallas has long employed a translation services department to remedy communication issues, but now is becoming the first hospital in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex The Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area, a title designated by the U.S. Census as of 2003, encompasses 12 counties within the U.S. state of Texas. The metropolitan area is further divided into two metropolitan divisions: Dallas–Plano–Irving  to employ cutting-edge technology to supplement its human capabilities in bridging the ever-increasing language gap.

Beginning in April of this year, Children's will offer audio/video interpreter services to aid medical staff and employees in communicating with patients. The caregiver will speak to a live interpreter via MARTTI[TM] (My Accessible Real-Time Trusted Interpreter) and that person, trained in many languages and in medical terminology Medical terminology is a vocabulary for accurately describing the human body and associated components, conditions, processes and procedures in a science-based manner. This systematic approach to word building and term comprehension is based on the concept of: (1) Word roots, (2) , will speak to the patient families via real-time video conferencing See videoconferencing.

. The patient can then ask questions in return, which will be interpreted back to the caregiver. In this way, clinicians and family alike can ask questions and receive answers in their native language.

"It's never a question as to whether families can better understand and question the care they are receiving when they can communicate with the physicians, nurses, and other caregivers here in the hospital," said Edgardo Garcia, director of translation services at Children's Medical Center Dallas. "This technology will support the existing group of staff interpreters, and will allow us to serve more families in real time."

Translation services at Children's include the capabilities of 22 dedicated, full-time interpreters who, in the past year, fielded more than 110,000 encounters for interpretation, making important medical information available in the patient family's target language, accurately and completely.

Children's will utilize a service known as MARTTI[TM] (My Accessible Real-Time Trusted Interpreter) from the Language Access Network. The service can interpret in 150 languages, including American Sign Language American Sign Language

MARTTI[TM] is a wireless, mobile, video conferencing service that connects hospital personnel in real-time to medically trained interpreters. By utilizing an advanced and medically approved wireless system in the hospital, each MARTTI[TM] unit can be moved freely to any patient's bedside for an immediate response. Each MARTTI[TM] unit has a flat video screen and camera that can access an interpreter with a quick push of a button, instantly connecting medical personnel to a video operator who will direct the video call to the appropriate language interpreter.

With this technology, Children's becomes the first hospital in Dallas/Fort Worth to offer the service for its patients who have limited English proficiency and patients and families who are Deaf or have limited hearing.
