Excel switches to be deployed in major telecom installation in Thailand.


HYANNIS, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 30, 1997--Excel, Inc. announced today that the company's programmable switches will be an integral part of what is expected to be the largest installation of enhanced services equipment in Thailand.

) recently signed the $10 million contract with TelecomAsia Corporation Public Co., Ltd. and Sahaviriya Infortech Computer Co., Ltd. The contract calls for Boston Technology to supply state-of-the-art ACCESS NP (tm) voice messaging Using voice mail as an alternative to electronic mail, in which voice messages are intentionally recorded, not because the recipient was not available.  platforms in TelecomAsia's Personal Cordless Telephone (PCT (Private Communications Technology) A protocol from Microsoft that provides secure transactions over the Web. See security protocol. ) network serving Bangkok, the largest metropolitan area in Southeast Asia.

Through a 25-year build-transfer-operate contract with the state-owned Telephone organization of Thailand (TOT), TelecomAsia is building 2.6 million new phone lines in Bangkok. TelecomAsia will offer value-added services over its all-digital network to generate additional revenue. The ability to quickly and easily develop new applications to respond to customer demands is also critical in offering value-added services and meeting feature customer requirements.

The Access NP platforms will support hundreds of thousands of Personal Cordless Telephone subscribers in Bangkok with call answering, partitioned mailboxes, message notification and paging. The Access NP will be implemented as Service Nodes in a unique network configuration using Personal Handyphone System (PHS (Personal Handyphone System) A TDMA-based cellular phone system introduced in Japan in mid-1995. Operating in the 1880-1930 MHz band, PHS uses microcells that cover an area only 100 to 500 meters in diameter, resulting in lower equipment costs but requiring more base ) and Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) Technologies.
