Excel Switching Provides Carrier-Class Switching Solution For New Zealand's CallPlus Telephony Services.

HYANNIS, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 5, 1999--

Excel's EXS EXS Expandable Switching System (Lucent)
EXS Executed Schedule
Switching Solution Passes New Zealand's SS7

Interconnect Testing in a Record Four Days

Excel Switching Corporation (Nasdaq:XLSW XLSW Excel Switching (former stock symbol; now delisted) ), a leading provider of open switching platforms for telecommunications networks worldwide, announced today that CallPlus, a New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland.  based Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier) An organization offering local telephone service that is not one of the traditional telephone companies. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowed competition to the incumbent telcos (ILECs), enabling new companies (CLECs) ), has chosen Excel's ONE Architecture(tm) Expandable Switching System (EXS) to provide tandem switching for its telecommunications services.

Local integration, installation and testing of the Excel switch was carried out by Telemedia, a New Zealand based systems integrator that develops and resells systems based on Excel's EXS platform.

CallPlus leases network capacity from Telecom New Zealand Telecom New Zealand (NZX: TEL ASX: TEL NYSE: NZT) is a Wellington, New Zealand-based telephone company and, through its subdivision Xtra, an internet service provider. It has been run as a publicly-traded private company since 1990.  and resells telecom network services to its customers. Excel's ONE Architecture product strategy to provide open, scalable network solutions will enable CallPlus to use the EXS system to provide services such as tandem switching and enhanced services on one switch. Because the EXS platform is programmable, CallPlus can customize its offerings to provide future enhanced services such as voice messaging Using voice mail as an alternative to electronic mail, in which voice messages are intentionally recorded, not because the recipient was not available. , calling card services The software support for PC Cards. PC Card applications talk to Card Services. See PC Card. , VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks.  and call screening. With EXS, CallPlus will have a flexible and scalable network solution that can support existing signaling protocols as well as billing and subscriber requirements. The flexibility of the platform was a major factor in enabling CallPlus to pass Telecom New Zealand's SS7 interconnect test in four days.

"We are pleased that CallPlus has chosen Excel to meet its switching needs, " said Robert Madonna, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Excel. "Excel's ONE Architecture allows for efficient use of network capacity, seamless integration An addition of a new application, routine or device that works smoothly with the existing system. It implies that the new feature or program can be installed and used without problems. Contrast with "transparent," which implies that there is no discernible change after installation.  and simplified network management -- essential for fast- growing CLECs like CallPlus who want to quickly implement revenue generating services."

The flexibility of CallPlus' EXS solution is accomplished by using Excel's patented Programmable Protocol Language (PPL PPL - Polymorphic Programming Language. An interactive, extensible language, based on APL, from Harvard University.

["Some Features of PPL - A Polymorphic Programming Language", T.A. Standish, SIGPLAN Notices 4(8) (Aug 1969)].
). PPL is a graphical programming language that allows developers to quickly and cost effectively customize the switch software, including both network signaling protocols and switch-resident call control software. With network signaling PPL, developers can offer their products on a wide variety of networks by modifying protocols to adapt to local signaling requirements, such as SS7 signaling variants. PPL call control allows developers to customize the call model in order to differentiate their applications, enabling them to offer unique, competitive services to the carrier community.

"With Excel's programmable and flexible switching solution, we were able to pass Telecom New Zealand's SS7 interconnect tests in record time -- four days," said Malcolm Dick, president of CallPlus. "Traditional switches can take up to six months to gain SS7 approval. The use of Excel's PPL really accelerated the process, enabling us to easily and quickly comply with Telecom New Zealand's network requirements. We have also been able to integrate VPN services and real-time call detail processing and CLI (1) (Call Level Interface) A database programming interface from the SQL Access Group (SAG), an SQL membership organization. SAG's CLI is an attempt to standardize the SQL language for database access.  management into our billing system in less than a day's development effort."

Open, scalable switching solutions provide a number of benefits to carriers. In addition to supporting worldwide network signaling requirements, an open system enables companies to bring new, differentiated services to market faster. A scalable system enables emerging and established carriers to start small and grow as their subscriber base increases, providing a cost-effective solution.
