Excel, Inc. and Natural MicroSystems Demonstrate Industry Leading Wireless & Third Party Integration Features at PCS '97.

HYANNIS, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 22, 1997--PCS '97 Booth no. 13209--Excel, Inc. and Natural MicroSystems are joining forces at PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995. This radio spectrum in the 1.  '97 to demonstrate a new low-cost solution for wireless infrastructure platforms. Excel, the industry leader in programmable switching systems, in collaboration with Natural MicroSystems, will demonstrate high performance switching and vocoding capabilities in a compact system that, for the first time, offers a truly scalable solution for wireless developers and operators. The demonstration system features Excel's fully redundant CSN CSN Crosby, Stills, and Nash (band)

CSN Confédération des Syndicats Nationaux (French)

 subsystem.

Visitors to Excel's booth (no. 13209) and Natural MicroSystems' booth (no. 12021) will be able to compare voice quality between a typical wireline call and a wireless call utilizing the new switching and vocoding technology. The first voice path is a straight 64Kbps voice channel switched between the Excel and Natural MicroSystems booths. The second voice path passes between the CSN and vocoder over Excel's Resource Bus Interface (RBI RBI

) and is switched at 16Kbps through Excel's Subrate Controller to the second booth. The call then goes through the reverse process before being switched back to the originating booth. Due to the high performance of the vocoding and subrate switching systems, the voice quality of the two calls is virtually indistinguishable.

The availability of technology using open, off-the-shelf systems from Excel and Natural MicroSystems creates a new class of wireless platforms that are cost effective in any size network. Fully featured, redundant Mobile Switching Centers (MSC (1) (MSC.Software Corporation, Santa Ana, CA, www.mscsoftware.com) Founded in 1963 by Richard H. MacNeal and Robert G. Schwendler, MSC is the world's largest provider of mechanical computer aided engineering (MCAE) strategies, simulation software and services. ) and Base Station Controllers (BSC (Binary Synchronous Communications) See bisync. ) can be deployed using the features and functionality displayed in the PCS '97 demonstration.

Excel's fully redundant CSN programmable switch used in the demonstration will incorporate new capabilities and components being showcased at the PCS '97 show.

Redundant CSN Programmable Switching Platform -

The CSN has been enhanced to support full redundancy for all system components. All Matrix, line interface, SS7 DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive , Power and System Resource cards can be configured for simplex or redundant operation.

Subrate Controller -

The new Sub-Rate Controller (SRC (SouRCe) Contrast with DST, which is an abbreviation of "destination." ) turns the CSN (and the 2,048 port LNX LNX Linux (operating system)
LNX Links
switching system) into a true bit switch. That is, any bit or set of bits from one channel can be switched to any other channel. In digital wireless systems using 8Kbps or 16Kbps air interfaces, the SRC increases the CSN's effective switching capacity to over 8,000 and 4,000 subrate voice channels respectively.

Analog Interface I/O card -

Excel is now supporting direct connectivity to analog telephones with the introduction of its Analog Interface Card (AIC AIC Association des Infermières Canadiennes. ). The AIC-8 offers 8 ports of analog connections supporting FXS loop-start interfaces. Multiple AIC cards can be deployed in a node to support increased analog capacity.

SS7 Redundancy -

The SS7 Fault Tolerant Redundancy feature achieves the highest level of SS7 reliability found in the market today. The product enhancement consists of a combination of hardware redundancy, mirroring technology and sophisticated software that ensures that any single point of failure will not interrupt service, protecting all calls, whether stable or transient.

New at PCS '97 for Natural MicroSystems

Natural MicroSystems will demonstrate the award winning TX3000 and SS7 product family; the IS-641 Vocoder and TRAU TRAU Transcoder and Rate Adaption Unit
TRAU Transcoder and Rate Adapter Unit
; and the Alliance Generation Quad T1/E1 platform which supports four T1/E1 lines on a single board.
