Real Show Opens to Record Attendance and 495 Booths!

The National Apartment Association Education Conference welcomed thousands of multihousing employees to the new Ernest L. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans New Orleans (ôr`lēənz –lənz, ôrlēnz`), city (2006 pop. 187,525), coextensive with Orleans parish, SE La., between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, 107 mi (172 km) by water from the river mouth; founded  from June 22-24 as the 61st annual convention featured The Real Show of Real Estate Management tradeshow and an array of educational seminars, wrapped around opening and closing keynote addresses by human behavioral specialist Dr. Ruth Westheimer Ruth Westheimer, Ed.D (born Karola Ruth Siegel on June 4, 1928) is a popular American sex therapist and author best known as Dr. Ruth. Dr. Ruth's lively hour-long presentation on the opening day included a series of questions posed to her by audience members through NAA Vice President Scott Gardner Scott Gardner (born April 1 1988) is a young English footballer who was born in Luxembourg and despite being a natural right winger[1], plays as a right back for Leeds United. He has played for the England national team at Under-16 and 17 age groups. . Then, it was on to the tradeshow floor for the diminutive Dr. Ruth and an afternoon of book signing of many of her bestsellers. More than 400 vendors set up an array of colorful and technically-savvy booths, spanning the convention center floor.

Between free giveaways and snacks from numerous vendors, it was a festive afternoon of rekindling old friendships and making new ones as the smell of popcorn and candy was in abundance in the comfortable setting of the tradeshow floor.

Things really began getting festive about 30 minutes after The Real Show opened it doors when Dr. Ruth, who mixed and mingled with NAA members as she signed her books and toured the tradeshow floor, capped her whirlwind afternoon with the site of the day--dumping NAA President Jim Hepfner into the NAA Dunk Tank A dunk tank, also known as a dunking booth or dunking machine, is an attraction mainly used in funfairs, fundraisers, and personal parties. Basically, a dunk tank consists of a large tank of water, over which a seat is suspended. . Foregoing the traditional toss of the tennis ball, instead she pushed the bullseyed target with her hand, sending President Hepfner sprawling into the icy cold dunk tank water.

NAA's President did receive a consolation prize--a kiss from Dr. Ruth--for being such a good sport. Of course, Hepfner also managed to get in some good-natured ribbing and heckling of many of the NAA members, who paid $10 a throw for an opportunity to dunk him. Barbara Herring, Ron Shelton, Mary Beth Marshall, Scott Gardner, Phil Carlock, Jerry Molique, and Larry Bellack. They all left the dunk tank drenched drench

Dr. Ruth's presentation followed the first seven of 32 educational sessions over the three days, covering a wide-range of topics pertinent to the multifamily housing industry. Many of the sessions had few empty seats as NAA members listened to presentations ranging from substance abuse to managing a younger workforce.

That night, the NAA contingent was ready to party as they danced and grooved to the tunes of the multi-talented Jason D. Williams at the Welcome Reception in nearby Generations Hall. The nearly 100 members of the host Greater Apartment Association of New Orleans added to the carnival-like setting of the night by donning Mardi Gras Mardi Gras (mär`dē grä), last day before the fasting season of Lent. It is the French name for Shrove Tuesday. Literally translated, the term means "fat Tuesday" and was so called because it represented the last opportunity for  costumes and joining in an impromptu parade.

The NAA Property Tours highlighted the second day of the education conference as approximately 100 NAA members spent the morning touring four of the snazziest properties in the New Orleans area. More educational sessions were on tap and the The Real Show drew large crowds for the three hours it opened that afternoon.

The final educational sessions kicked off the third and final day. Large crowds again filled the convention center for the last day of The Real Show. The show ended with six lucky attendees walking away with over $5,000 in cash, presented to them by 2000 Conference Chair, Tom Shelton.

Then, it was time for the short walk over the adjoining auditorium where Gen. Powell enthralled en·thrall

The NAA group was really ready for that night's Closing Gala following a lively preview of next year's 2001 NAA Education Conference by conference chair Rob Johnston and 2001 NAA President Phil Carlock, along with some help from a Tina Turner The of this article or section may be compromised by "weasel words".

The NAA Paragon Awards, just prior to the Closing Gala, recognized some of multifamily housing's outstanding individuals and properties. Everyone got an opportunity to kick loose at the Closing Gala, twisting, shouting and dancing to the tunes of 1960's icon, Chubby chub·by

The Welcome Reception, held at Generations Hall, featured plenty of local entertainment.

Jim Hepfner, Mary Beth Marshall, Ron Shelton, Barbara Herring, Scott Gardner, Phil Carlock, Larry Bellack and Jerry Molique were the volunteer "dunkees" -- luring NAA members to try and dunk them for $10 a throw. When it was over, the happy, but wet participants helped raise nearly $5,500 for the Education Foundation.
