The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  agreement.

Auto-trol will integrate Excalibur's RetrievalWare pattern-recognition and semantic network search and retrieval software into CENTRA 2000, a comprehensive system for creating, distributing and managing technical information.

CENTRA 2000 combines document management, workflow, product data management, change management and messaging in a graphical, client/server computing environment. Applications include engineering document management, manufacturing product process management, petrochemical regulatory document management and long-document management for technical publishing.

CENTRA 2000 Release 3.0, incorporating Excalibur's RetrievalWare, will be available for shipment in March 1996. Platforms supported include SunOS, Solaris, HP-UX HP's version of Unix that runs on its 9000 family. It is based on SVID and incorporates features from BSD Unix along with several HP innovations.
