Everyone's health is elementary; ALTERNATIVELY SPEAKING.Byline: Valerie HILL FROM time to time in conventional medicine, a wonder drug will be hailed as a ``breakthrough'',acatchall substance guaranteed to change life as we know it Life As We Know It is an American television drama on the ABC network during the 2004-2005 season. It was created by Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah. The series was based on the novel Doing It by British writer Melvin Burgess. , Jim. Aspirin, Prozac,Viagrathey've all hit the headlines and lived up,or down, to expectations on varying degrees. The same is true in alternative medicine. The ginkgo tree is the only surviving species of the Ginkgoaceae family. ,aloe vera have been lauded as miracle products over the years, sometimes perhaps beyond their capabilities. But an unsung hero in the natural health supplement hit parade is magnesium. In many ways, the substances we call minerals are the Cinderellas of nutrition. Everybody knows about the vitamins and the main building blocks of the nutritional castle-- the carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Yet hidden away in the cellar is Cinderella, being helpful, essential even, but going unrecognised. Soessential is she that ifher services are withdrawn, the whole organisation becomes disrupted and is liable tocollapse. Minerals, especially the macro -minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, chlorine and magnesium, are vital to our existence. They are present in relatively large amounts in our bodies and so we need to include them in relatively large amounts in our diet. A magnesium deficient diet can include symptoms such as loss of appetite loss of appetite Medtalk Anorexia, see there , palpitations, irritability, weakness, insomnia, muscle tremors and skin problems. The current recommended daily allowance is 350 mg for men and 300 mg for women. A list of magnesium-rich foods makes a curious list. Cocoaand chocolate contain a lot of magnesium, plain chocolate more than milk. Nuts areallgood sources,as is seafood and all types ofgrains. Some vegetables are pretty rich, particularly beans, peas and spinach. As my mother used to say a diet is,of course, amixed thing and the sort of general foodstuffs foodstuffs npl → comestibles mpl foodstuffs npl → denrĂ©es fpl alimentaires foodstuffs food npl → that we tend to eat in quantity are very poor providers ofmagnesium. And who amI to argue? Meat and fish contain only relatively small quantities of magnesium and the same is true of fruits, salads and dairy products. It is obvious to see who is most likely to be self-selecting a really low magnesium diet. It is the person who is overweight and therefore decides to slim by opting for a high-protein, low-carbohydratediet. On cannot emphasise enough our need for magnesium. It is particularly important in maintaining the health of the heart, arteries and kidneys. It has also been found to play an important part in combating osteoporosis and it can also help to alleviate the symptoms of pre-menstrual tension. About 70pcof our tissue magnesium resides in our bodies and teeth, but it appears to be well locked in. In other words Adv. 1. in other words - otherwise stated; "in other words, we are broke" put differently , there is little or no interchange between the magnesium in our bones and teeth and the tissues of the rest of our body. This means we rely very much on a regular day-to-day intake of the element to make sure our needs are met. |
