Event opens summer cycling season.

Byline: Carolyn Lamberson The Register-Guard

On Saturday, the Science Factory hopes that Eugene will pedal on down for a day of bicycling fun.

The museum's first (and perhaps first annual) Bike Day is intended to kick off the summer riding season in style. It will include a bicycle tour of the "planets" - the model of the solar system solar system, the sun and the surrounding planets, natural satellites, dwarf planets, asteroids, meteoroids, and comets that are bound by its gravity. The sun is by far the most massive part of the solar system, containing almost 99.9% of the system's total mass.  that stretches out along the riverbank bike path - and a number of lighthearted educational sessions.

"We keep calling ourselves a bike-friendly community," said Joyce Berman, Science Factory marketing director, "yet there was nothing that's come together - in our minds - to celebrate this. We think that it has the potential to be a real unifying event for our community.

The day also is part of the museum's long-term strategy to reach a larger segment of the community. Despite the fact that the Science Factory is located between Autzen Stadium The stadium is tucked between the Willamette River and Coburg Hills. The uniquely shaped bowl blends in with the wooded Eugene landscape. The shape also allows for unique acoustics, making it one of the loudest stadiums in NCAA Football for its capacity.  and Alton Baker Park Alton Baker Park is located in Eugene, Oregon, United States, near Autzen Stadium. It features duck ponds, bicycle trails, and a dog park, and directly touches the Ferry Street Bridge. , people seem to think that it's out of the way, Berman said.

`We're actually something that's pretty central to the city," she said.

If you're heading to the bike fest, you can pedal there as well - just don't forget your bike helmet, Berman said. Free bicycle valet parking valet parking

From noon to 1:30 p.m., Science Factory volunteers will be stationed at each of the model planets, where people can learn a bit about the planet and stamp their "Planet Passport."

If the weather is really bad - pouring, consistent rain - the planet tour will be canceled.

Five of the model planets are in Alton Baker Park, 100 Day Island Road; the others are along the bike path in Skinner Butte Skinner Butte (also called Skinner's Butte) is a prominent hill on the north edge of downtown Eugene, Oregon, United States, near the Willamette River. The planetary tour is free, but passport holders will be charged a $4 admission to join in events at the museum. Participants can attend to more than a dozen sessions, demonstrations and activities, including an obstacle course, bike safety bingo, helmet decorating, theft prevention, a unicycle show, safety inspections and something called "Mysteries of the Flat Tire Revealed."

Representatives of Lane Transit District's Smart Ways to School program will be on hand, as will members of the Eugene Police bike squad, the city of Eugene's bicycle and pedestrian coordinator, and the folks behind the People Powered Fridays program.
