Secretary of State Bill Bradbury Bill Bradbury (born 1949) is the Secretary of State for the U.S. state of Oregon. Bradbury, a Democrat, previously served in the Oregon Legislative Assembly, and ran unsuccessfully against incumbent Senator Gordon Smith in 2002.  used the words of Martin Luther King Jr. Monday night to honor King's life and remind others that his statements still ring true today.

More than 300 people packed into the Hult Center's Soreng Theater for the 17th annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, titled "The Courage To Pursue Peace." Speakers and entertainers spent two hours recalling King's legacy and celebrating his birthday, which was observed Monday.

"On this day of commemoration, I hope we will do more than just remember Dr. King," said Bradbury, the event's keynote speaker. "I hope we pledge in our own hearts to follow his example ... and heed his call to speak for love and justice. I hope we all find the courage to pursue peace."

Bradbury liberally sprinkled his 20-minute presentation with quotations from several of King's speeches from the 1960s. More than just a civil rights leader, King gave several talks during the three years leading up to his 1968 assassination Assassination

"I am sure that if Martin Luther King Jr. were alive today, he would have joined those in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere who have taken a stand against war in Iraq."

The secretary of state used the conclusion of King's 1967 "Beyond Vietnam" speech to clarify his point.

"Social change comes most meaningfully through nonviolent action," he reminded the crowd, which responded with a loud round of applause.

Charmaine Coleman of Eugene said Bradbury's presentation was exactly what she came to hear on Monday night.

"It was absolutely right on the mark," said Coleman, who has attended all 17 of the annual King celebrations. "Bill Bradbury's speech showed respect and dignity for Dr. King, which I really appreciate."

Yote Cooley said he was pleased that Bradbury used King's own words to honor his legacy.

"To constantly hear them over and over, even reworked by someone else, is still refreshing and touching to my heart," Cooley said.
