Shaw, this year's recipient of the Special Recognition Award, paid tribute to the contributions Karen made to her community for three decades. Shaw held the position of city councillor for Sudbury between 1991 and 1997, was the executive director for the Cambrian Foundation from 1989 to 1996, a Sudbury Board of Education trustee from 1976 to 1985 and a member of the Laurentian University Laurentian University, main campus at Sudbury, Ont., Canada; bilingual, coeducational; founded 1960. Among its faculties are those in astronomy, commerce, computer science, education, engineering, law, mathematics, music, native studies, nursing, physics, and social board of governers from 1986 to 1996. Penasse-Mayer has taken an active role in providing a voice for indigenous women worldwide. Rosetta Sicoli, owner of Thymely Manner restaurant in Sault ste. Marie, and Karyn Loree-Spacek, a business manager in Kapuskasing, were both recognized with the private sector award for northeastern Ontario. Sicoli said the biggest influence in her life has been her mother, who has supported and applauded her efforts and accomplishments in the business world. "She taught me to work hard and it would pay off, to be honest and I would always be treated fairly, to be generous and I would be rich in happiness, to seize opportunities because they were gifts from above and to dream because dreams do come true," Sicoli said. About 240 delegates attended the IW event held in Sault Ste. Marie, while over 190 individuals attended the IW event in Thunder Bay. This year the event garnered over 100 influential women award nominations. Bev Topping, guest speaker at both awards ceremonies, said "let us never forget why we're here (at the awards). Royal Bank, a major sponsor of both awards luncheons, pointed out that women have been venturing into business at an unprecedented rate. In Thunder Bay, Nova Lawson won the public sector award in the northwest, while Paula Sdao captured the private sector award in the northwest. Lawson is the co-ordinator of Aboriginal initiatives at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. Her goal, she says, is to influence aboriginal youth to excel. Her accomplishments include establishing collaborations between national First Nation organizations and the university, co-authoring a handbook, which details Aboriginal innovations, and running a consulting business. Sdao is an abatement and air quality supervisor for Wardrop Engineering in Thunder Bay and has been instrumental in designing and implementing programs which focus on improving the environment. |
