European supplier brings novel machine design to North America. (Keeping up with Thermoforming).

Germany's Geiss Thermoforming is seeking to establish itself in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  by setting up a continent-wide marketing network for specialized, halogen-heated, single-station machines. Geiss has made recent sales to prominent custom former Profile Plastics Corp. in Lake Bluff, Ill., as well as to GE Plastics in Pittsfield, Mass., for prototyping structural panels, and to an automotive OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  for making exterior parts.  show in June, Chicago-based Geiss Thermoforming USA plans to unveil machine concepts rarely used by U.S. thermoformers.

"Special features of our single-station, closed-chamber forming machines make them competitive in terms of productivity and quality versus in-line single-station and rotary classes," claims Albert Woltron, director of the U.S. firm. The machines are typically fed cut sheets but can be adapted for roll-stock.

One innovation is use of halogen halogen (hăl`əjĕn) [Gr.,=salt-bearing], any of the chemically active elements found in Group 17 of the periodic table; the name applies especially to fluorine (symbol F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), and iodine (I).  heating elements Noun 1. heating element - the component of a heater or range that transforms fuel or electricity into heat
bar - a heating element in an electric fire; "an electric fire with three bars"
(though Geiss also offers ceramic heaters). Halogen heating is said to shorten response times and eliminate the need for preheating, resulting in up to 60% faster cycles and 20% lower energy consumption.

Woltron. He says the "closed-chamber" design provides continuous control of sheet heating, sagging, and stretching to yield high-precision formed parts. Each machine is custom designed. Geiss can incorporate patented automatic, fully-adjustable quick-mold-change devices to increase flexibility.

Geiss Thermoforming USA plans to introduce here the three-, four-, and five-axis trimmers its parent makes in Germany. A new version has dual-use capability for trimming formed parts and machining aluminum tools. A feature of Geiss trimmers is CNC-controlled linear motors, an option that increases trimming speed and narrows the gap between forming and trimming cycle times. This development is said to give Geiss's newest TT-In-One (in-line form-trim) system productivity advantages in some markets. The latter system uses an ultrasonic ultrasonic /ul·tra·son·ic/ (-son´ik) beyond the upper limit of perception by the human ear; relating to sound waves having a frequency of more than 20,000 Hz.
