SANTA CLARA Santa Clara, city, Cuba
Santa Clara (sän`tä klä`rä), city (1994 est. pop. 217,000), capital of Villa Clara prov., central Cuba.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 20, 2002

Atrica Inc., a leading provider of Optical Ethernet equipment for the rapidly expanding Metro networking market, today announced that Uni2 France Telecom Group subsidiary Al-Pi Telecomunicacions, a leading regional telecommunications service provider A Telecommunications Service Provider or TSP is a type of Communications Service Provider that has traditionally provided telephone and similar services. This category includes ILECs, CLECs, and mobile wireless companies.  based in Barcelona, Spain, has chosen Atrica's Optical Ethernet System as the foundation for its next-generation Metropolitan Area Network.

Using Atrica's carrier-class Optical Ethernet System which includes the A-8000 Series Optical Ethernet Core Switches, the A-2100 Optical Ethernet Edge Switch and ASPEN, Atrica's Service Platform for Ethernet Networks, Al-Pi's Metro network infrastructure is delivering a new set of profitable data services to its customer base. The new Optical Ethernet-based services include a point-to-point Ethernet virtual private line service that provides improved performance over Al-Pi's traditional 64kbps leased line A private communications channel leased from a common carrier. Most digital lines require four wires (two pairs) for full-duplex transmission.

After reviewing a number of other Metro equipment solutions, Al-Pi chose Atrica's Optical Ethernet System because it could offer the scalability, flexible bandwidth and carrier-class attributes that Al-Pi needed, along with a substantial improvement in the carrier's economics.

"After a thorough examination of possible solutions to our Metro networking needs, we determined that Atrica's Optical Ethernet System was the most obvious and direct route to delivering profitable new Ethernet-based services," said Aime Brial, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Al-Pi Telecomunicacions. "Key features like sub-50msec resiliency, carrier-class QoS, MPLS-based traffic engineering and easy service provisioning overcame any reservations we had about using Ethernet as the basis for our Metro network and paved the way for a substantial reduction in both our capital and operational expenditures. We believe Atrica's solution will be the means to more profitable Metro services for Al-Pi and our customers."

"Europe is obviously a key market for Atrica and Al-Pi is a good example of some of the innovative and forward-thinking carriers in this region who are quickly discovering the economic benefits of Metro Ethernet A metropolitan area network (MAN) that uses a 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) backbone rather than SONET/SDH links. Ethernet offers a more economical alternative. In a Metro Ethernet network, multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) may be deployed to provide quality of service (QoS). ," said Francois Tournesac, Atrica's Director of Southern European Sales. "We look forward to working with Al-Pi to help deliver a new set of cost-effective Metro Ethernet services to their subscribers."
