Eurocontrol Selects Persistence Software's PowerTier to Manage European Flight Plans.

Eurocontrol, the European organization for safety in air navigation and supplier of flight plans to Air Traffic Controls throughout Europe, has chosen Persistence Software's (Nasdaq:PRSW) PowerTier as the foundation for its new four-dimensional flight plan system. This system operates both advanced planning and current flight plans for planes throughout Europe for four elements including longitude, altitude, distance and time for each aircraft. Based on the company's patented Distributed Dynamic Caching(TM) (DDC) technology, Eurocontrol estimates the Persistence PowerTier Application Server will reduce the time taken to write a flight plan by 66%.

PowerTier(TM) is providing the back-end technology allowing Eurocontrol to distribute vital flight information in real-time, at a fraction of the cost. With almost seven million flights each year, rising by five percent per annum and an estimated forecast to double by 2015, Eurocontrol needed technology that would quickly and cost-effectively receive, validate, correct and distribute all flight plans affecting the IFPS System in Europe.

All flight plans are replicated at both its key sites based in Brussels and Paris so that if there is a problem at one the other takes over. By delivering a highly scalable foundation, Persistence enables access to the most accurate and updated operations data to support millions of flights each year while ensuring that Eurocontrol is able to grow to meet the demands of thousands of new flights over the coming years.

The development team at Eurocontrol decided on a component-based addition to the current system, which went live in 1995, where four separately built applications would be required. Its patented object relational (O/R) mapping, and cache synchronization technologies help reduce inefficiencies in query-intensive applications -- speeding responsiveness and freeing capacity throughout the infrastructure to serve more users or offer more services. Persistence caching solutions help sites "remember" answers from each processing step, therefore when the site receives a request for which it has an answer, it can respond immediately, without traveling to back end systems to generate an answer. Synchronization technology ensures that these cached answers are always correct, even as the source data changes.

The development team investigated several turnkey products and in-house development chose Persistence Software's PowerTier(TM). None of the turnkey products could handle the highly advanced relational to object functionality. Company representatives state that the in-house development would have taken between five to ten years to be fully operational and therefore was not an option. The new system will be fully operational by the end of 2002.
