The infill drill program, while focussed on upgrading Inferred resources to the Indicated category, has identified high grade copper - zinc zones within this orebody. This is exemplified on Section 18.5 where two widely (290 metres) spaced surface drill holes intersected 5.6 metres grading 3.4% copper and 1 metre grading 3.2% copper, respectively. Underground infill drilling on this section between the two surface drill holes has identified a thick and high grade polymetallic zone that averages 21 metres in true thickness and grades 13.1% copper and 7.6% zinc. This newly identified high grade zone is expected to raise the overall tonnage TONNAGE, mar. law. The capacity of a ship or vessel.
     2. The act of congress of March 2, 1799, s. 64, 1 Story's L. U. S. 630, directs that to ascertain the tonnage of any ship or vessel, the surveyor, &c.
, as well as the copper and zinc grades of the zone, and it is expected to contribute to an overall higher mill head grade when it is scheduled for production.

Similar examples of identifying thicker and higher grade zones tested by widely spaced surface drill holes are documented elsewhere on the Neves-Corvo property. The Lombador orebody, tested only by wide-space surface drilling to date, has excellent potential to discover high-grade copper and/or zinc zones similar to those described above with additional infill drilling.

The Zambujal orebody is located above the main haulage level in the mine and as a result the ore will not need to be handled by the underground conveying system. At present it is estimated that the current mineral resource at Zambujal will provide at least 10% of Neves-Corvo's copper production for the next 10 years. The contribution of this orebody will be determined when this phase of the drilling program is finished and the year-end mineral resource estimate is completed.

The Company has also recently begun a surface mine site drill program with a drill rig and crews from Major Drilling International Group to identify new resources along the largely open edges of the Neves-Corvo deposit. Initial drilling is focused on the western edge of the Neves orebody, which has a strike length of over 1 kilometre and varies from 5 to 20 metres in thickness. The surface drill program has been budgeted at 20,000 metres and will include drilling at the Corvo and Lombador orebodies, in addition to the drilling at Neves. Drill results from this program will be released periodically as assay results are received.

A second drill rig from Major Drilling is scheduled to arrive in Portugal by the end of 2005 to test regional exploration targets on the Malhadinha exploration concession and four other exploration concessions that are well advanced in the permitting process with the Portuguese government. These four concessions and the Malhadinha concession total approximately 2,700 square kilometres Square kilometre (U.S. spelling: square kilometer), symbol km², is a decimal multiple of the SI unit of surface area, the square metre, one of the SI derived units. 1 km² is equal to:

  • 100 ha (hectare)

hosted massive sulphide stratigraphy stratigraphy, branch of geology specifically concerned with the arrangement of layered rocks (see stratification). Stratigraphy is based on the law of superposition, which states that in a normal sequence of rock layers the youngest is on top and the oldest on the  in the world. In addition to the 20,000 metres of drilling planed for the Neves-Corvo mine site exploration, the Company has budgeted a further 26,000 metres to systematically test targets identified on these concessions.

In total, US$10 million has been budget for mine-site and regional exploration programs in 2006. Of the 46,000 metres of drilling planned in this program, 3,000 metres are expected to be complete by the end of 2005 and the balance is planned for 2006.
