A police motorcycle is often called a "motor" by police officers in the United States.  officers traded their Harleys in for BMWs this month, but they promise it's nothing personal.

The 10-member traffic enforcement team had been riding Harley-Davidson Dyna Defenders for years, trading them in every two years for newer models.

But the American motorcycle company stopped making its police bike, forcing the team to find another vendor.

, a bike popular with police departments, in part because of BMW's long history of providing motorcycles with anti-lock braking systems.

Sgt. Derel Schulz, who supervises the city's traffic enforcement unit, was worried that Harley-Davidson devotees might be offended at the brand swap.

"People are very passionate about their bikes," he said.

More than once during a recent interview, Schulz emphasized that the Harleys were fine bikes and that the company's decision to stop making the police-specific model forced the traffic team's hand.

"Our previous bikes met our needs while we were using them, but because the company stopped offering that model for police use, we were forced to look for other options, and the bike we selected best meets our needs," Schulz said.

The team bought 11 bikes, one for each officer and one for backup, at a cost of $19,500 each.

The motorcycle officers can adjust the seats, windshield and brake and clutch levers without any tools, providing a more comfortable ride, Schulz said.

The motorcycles also have lower emissions, better fuel economy and a quieter engine, he said.

As part of the deal, the BMW dealership accepted the team's old bikes for trade-in.
