Eugene events to honor MLK Jr.

 Boulevard and conclude with an evening celebration at the Hult Center.

Both events, held on the national holiday honoring King's birthday and legacy, are free.

The march, sponsored by the Eugene-Springfield branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), organization composed mainly of American blacks, but with many white members, whose goal is the end of racial discrimination and segregation. , will begin at 9 a.m. at the John Serbu Youth Campus on Martin Luther King Boulevard. Marchers will head west before crossing the Willamette River Willamette River

"We have a street now," said NAACP chapter president Marilyn Mays, "so it just seemed so much more significant to have people march on his street."

Next Monday evening's celebration will feature author Ralph Wiley giving a keynote address titled "Should America be the Moral Police of the World?" The Hult Center event begins at 7 p.m.

Earlier in the day, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Wiley will be at Borders Books at the Oakway Center in Eugene to sign copies of his books.

Wiley, a journalist, satirist and screenwriter, most recently collaborated on a book with King's youngest son, Dexter King, titled "Growing Up King: An Intimate Memoir." Wiley has also collaborated on books with a range of celebrities, including film director Spike Lee, attorney Johnnie Cochran and baseball player Eric Davis.

Wiley has written five books, including "Why Black People Tend to Shout" and "The Trials and Tribulations of the Making of `Malcolm X Malcolm X, 1925–65, militant black leader in the United States, also known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, b. Malcolm Little in Omaha, Neb. He was introduced to the Black Muslims while serving a prison term and became a Muslim minister upon his release in 1952. .' '

The Hult Center event is sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee. Lane Community College and its diversity team, the associated student union and the Black Student Union are among nearly 20 co-sponsors, which also include Lane County, the city of Eugene, Lane Transit District, Eugene Water and Electric Board and the Eugene School District Eugene School District (4J) is a public school district in the U.S. state of Oregon. It serves the city of Eugene Elementary schools
