Eugene area residents honored.Byline: Anne Williams The Register-Guard Eugene area residents came away with four of seven statewide honors given last weekend at the annual awards banquet of the Arc of Oregon in Hood River The Hood River is a tributary of the Columbia River in northwestern Oregon in the United States. Rusty Hawkins, an Arc of Lane County volunteer and member of People First, received the Sarolta Nagy Memorial Award, given to an individual with developmental disabilities who has made a special contribution on behalf of others with disabilities. People First is a self-advocacy organization run by and for adults with developmental disabilities. Marcie Ingledue, executive director of the Salem-based Arc of Oregon, said nominees from the Arc of Lane County usually fare well. The Eugene area is known for having strong advocates and programs. "We have 14 chapters statewide, but Lane County is one of the chapters that leads all the rest in terms of providing services," she said. "They're always doing something new and innovative there." |
